How to Troubleshoot Black Screen Error on Windows

Black screen error on Windows 10 is a pretty common issue, and it typically pops up when there is something wrong with the graphics processing unit drivers. You may have tried to fix it, but none of your efforts to troubleshoot this problem worked as you are here to fix it.

This problem can also get more severe if you try to troubleshoot it yourself without having proper knowledge.

Let’s see how you can get rid of the black display on Windows 10.

Fixing Black Screen on Windows 10

  1. Using a Bootable Installation Drive

For this method, you will need a bootable installation drive loaded with Windows 10 operating system. So before you get started, make sure to create bootable media using Microsoft’s official method. Once that is ready, you can follow the below instructions to troubleshoot the black screen error:

  1. Please plug in the bootable media drive to your computer’s USB port. You can also use a Windows 10 DVD in this process. Insert the DVD into the DVD drive.
  2. Once you have inserted the windows installation drive on your computer, restart your computer.
  3. Your computer will detect the bootable media and show you a message saying ‘press any key to boot the installation drive’ or something like that.
  4. Just obey whatever it says to boot the drive.
  5. It will now boot using the installation drive.
  6. You should now redirect to the Microsoft Windows 10 installation wizard.
  7. Click on the next option.
  8. Now instead of installing Windows 10, go to the troubleshoot option.
  9. Navigate to advanced options.
  10. Click on the command prompt.
  11. When the command prompt appears, please enter the below-given command and hit the enter button.
    1. bootrec /fixmbr
  12. This will start the command, and it will finish its operation.
  13. Once you see a successful message on the command prompt, please exit it.
  14. Pull out the installation media device from your computer.
  15. Start your computer as you normally do.

Now you should see the standard computer screen and the black screen should disappear. If the same thing happens again and you still see a black screen, please follow the next solution.

  • Upgrade Graphic Cards Driver

If you can still log in to your computer without getting any black screen, you should immediately update the graphics card driver. This will fix the black screen issues. Please follow the below steps for more information:

  1. Please find and open the device manager application on your computer.
  2. Open the display adaptors and right-click on the first option inside the display adaptors.
  3. Click on update driver.
  4. Follow the instructions on your screen and select the automatically update driver choice.
  5. Make sure your internet is working while updating the drivers.
  6. Now make sure to do the same with the rest of the drivers inside the display adaptor section.
  7. Once you have updated all drivers, restart your computer.

The black screen should be gone now, and you should be able to use your computer without any issues. If the problem still appears and you cannot access your device, you will need to clean install Windows 10 on your computer. If there is still any way to access your files, make sure to copy them on an additional or external drive. Once you have all the essential files in a different place, clean install your computer’s operating system.

We expect that the black screen issue will disappear after you follow the steps mentioned in this article. Thank you for coming here.
